What sunnies could be kept in a 70 cube with a built in overflow. Wet/Dry.

I'm not familiar with that size tank, but I'm assuming a 70g cube would be a little more than 25"X25"X25"? If tank size is your concern, I would think that any of the Lepomis species of sunfish or smaller would work out in that size tank. Rock bass could even work out well. Might be a little small for crappie, and definitely too small for black basses(Micropterus) species. If you're curious about stocking numbers of a sunfish only tank that size, there are others here that I'm sure could give you a better answer than I can as I haven't done a multiple sunfish only tank for a long time.......just too much bickering to contend with.

Good luck with it.

Steve

I came across an aquarium stocking calculator that has 917 species in it's list including 9 different Lepomis located here: http://www.aqadvisor...engthUnit=inch. Based on tank dimensions and which and how many filters the tank has on it.

Curious what everyone thinks of the calculations it makes.

I usually find the surface area of the tank in square inches and divide by 10 for most tanks or by 12 for tanks that are as tall or taller than they are wide. That gives me the number of inches of fish to stock by standard length. Also, for larger specimins, such as most sunfish and catfish (pretty mich anything that can grow larger than 6in SL), I multiply their mean SL times 1.5 to account for their larger mass.

Yes, I'm biased. Steve already did a good job listing potential members for your new tank, so I'll say this: a harem of 4-5 of the larger sunfishes (Bluegill, Redear, Black/White Crappie), 6-7 medium ones (Longear, Pumpkinseed, Green, are the Blackspotted and Redspotteds in this size range?), 8-9 small guys (Orangespotteds, Bantam, Dollar), 16-20 smaller guys (Bluespotted, Blackbanded), or a good 50-60 of the tiniest guys (the pygmy sunfishes). These numbers are based off of the stocking habits I've seen of cichlid keepers (non-African Cichlids, by the way) when they stock correspondingly sized cichlids in their tanks. It's easier on the fishes in any case if lots of caves/hiding spots/greenery is provided. Try to have 2/3 as many males as females in any arrangement, if you want to have both genders but as many males as possible. Bob, please fill us in on whatever you plan to do!

EDIT: Katfisher, that's a cool link, thank you for providing it.

I keep Elassoma gilberti, the gulf coast pygmy sunfish, in my 55 gallon tank.

This forum is really bad for me. LOL I now want a tank with some Orangespotted, Elassoma gilberti, some darters, etc. If I do that I'm going to have to move most of the furniture out of my house to make room for even more tanks. :) But that's ok, I don't use all that stuff much anyway, just taking up space. Only need my my couch, kitchen table .. oh my desk and the furniture a couple tanks are sitting on now.

BUT, I may be moving across the line into TN and not sure if I can legally keep any of those nor the ones I've got now including my Rockbass. I'll have to read the regs again or just contact someone to find out more. I may end up just having to continue commuting long distance. :(
