I have been trying to do some collecting with a couple of minnow traps around my area but so far I have not had the best luck. I was wondering what others here have used for bait in minnow traps and had good luck. I have read others having luck with things like chicken, canned cat food, and even Subway Italian sandwiches.

So far I have tried hotdogs, bread, ham and cheese, basically anything that we have in the frig where there is not enough for a meal. I am going to try some canned catfood this afternoon on a local stream and see what I can get.

Get a small can of cheap catfood, and make 2 or 3 small punctures in it so the juice will leak out. You'll attract an amazing variety of aquatic animals, golden shiners to eels to (if you're unlucky) raccoons.

I've seen a piece of bacon tied to a string catch a crayfish within 15 minutes. Well, if 'catch' means that it eats it and when you pull up the string it lets go.

The can of cat food. A few holes on both sides of the can, so the water can get in and out seems to work best. I also like to hang the can in the trap. I use a small mesh bag with a little hook on it so that can sits like a hocky puck on it's side and it hangs in the middle of the trap. I also make sure the trap is fully submerged because turtles and raccoons will knock it about.

thanks guys, I am really hoping for some topminnows and other minnow species, but I would not say no to a siren or something interesting like that.

Here's a couple of other threads with some discussion on trap baits. Good luck.

thanks for the links steve. I am seeing a trend of some people have good luck with anything but most everyone has good luck with cat food. I have three small cans of fancy feast that I will be putting into traps tomorrow morning and leaving all day and will see what I get.

I use a piece of bread (white bread seems to have worked the best) broken up into tiny pieces in the trap. I have also taken a pair of nylons (panty hose?) and cut up earthworms and put them in there. That one worked the best for me as I was looking for madtoms and I had typically gotten 1-3 at a time, with the earthworms I was getting 5-6 at a time. Also consider what your looking for, some fish will not be interested in a chunk of chicken, but would be in frozen corn ( have done this too.)

I need to try the catfood and see how it compares. Place to traps side by side and see how it works, one with earthworms and one with catfood.( why catfood and not dog food?)

Well my traps are set, one with a can if kitten fancy feast with three small holes in the lid and thirty down the stream I have a trap set with two chunks of old raw chicken. I did see a good amout of small fish right along the bank and there was a lot of cover along the banks. I will try to post up some photo on what I collect.
