Hello Ohio,

Early last month, I sent out a RFI for possible fish watching sites in the Cleveland area. I received some great tips on where to go, and despite having precious little time in the field I was able to get to at least one recommended spot- Pymatuning Lake. Additionally, I was able to explore a part of the Cuyahoga River at the National Park in Richfield and the Nimishillen Creek in Canton. In all, I identified five-species of fish and wonder if anyone may be able to help me with an sixth.

Identified=
Western blacknosed dace- Cuyuhoga
Northern hogsucker- Cuyahoga
Bluntnosed minnow- Canton, Nimishillen Creek
Golden redhorse- Canton, Nimishiillen Creek - not totally sure about this species. Pictures didn't come out.
Carp- Pymatuning

I thank those who were able to point me in the right direction. Sorry it took so long to post, however I had to wait to receive “The Fishes of Ohio” by Milton Trautman via interlibrary loan to help me sort out what I saw.

This is the fish I can't figure out. Small drainage creek flowing into Cuyahoga River at Richfield. Sand and rock bottom. Creek chub?

Glad you could make it out. Suprised you didn't see more kinds of fish at pymatuming, even from the spillway usually you can see actual native fish on the outskirts of the frenzy.

Disagree with my buddy Josh... I think the first fish is a creek chub... the fish is faded out some, but I see a hint of the dorsal fins spot/coloration... and teh gold spangles on the upper body combined with the overall shape and thick caudal peduncle... Semotilus...

I am going to cast my vote with Josh on this one. The dorsal fin spot would be at the very anterior end of the dorsal fin if it were a Semotilus, not in the middle, and it would have a lot bigger mouth. This looks like a Rhinichthys of some sort to me.

Josh is going to get a third vote. The first fish is definitely a blacknose dace.

I've been to Pymatuning before, but never came across such a massive group of carp. I was flyfishing for carp at a pond yesterday afternoon and would have liked to see a group of carp like that.

If you're ever around Linesville PA, you have to see the carp. It's, ahem, spectacular. Especially when the ducks start to walk on them.

Yeah that is a western blacknose dace, not a creek chub. Also despite them being non-native the spillway at Linesville is a sight to see. That lake is actually a pretty good fishing lake... walleye, yellow perch, crappie, smallmouth, and even a few muskellunge (Nate got a nice one there one time). Sorry Nate for not taking you up to Linesville when we were there, that is on the upper end of the lake where there is a spillway between the nature preseurve area and the main lake.

Wow, what a sight! As a carp fisherman, I have to wonder if they allow you to wet a line around there...

On one side of the causeway yes but not the side where the people feed them all.

Dear Everyone,

Thank you once again for your help. Looks like the file will be closed on this thread now.

I wish I could've been in the field more, however young teenagers made sure I wasn't.

I've enclosed one more blurry phot of the Western blacknose dace. That's when the battery ran out. I just don't understand the coloring

Wish I had more to report.

Thank you again, hope to meet some of you in September at the NANFA convention.
