I usually bring in bluegills and yellow perch YOY for the winter to get extra growth vs. zilch outside for my niche farm operation. If I don't heat the water it drops to about 62 F. in the winter, which would be fine for trout. However I was surprised to see after hanging on to some a little longer into late spring with temps out side in the 90's, that with the A.C. set to 73 F. upstairs without heating the water, the water stays at 65. F. So therefore if I wanted to and if I had reason to, I could keep trout in the basement for the summer.

I was actually surprised as I assumed the air temp would be higher and hence the water temp higher and probably to high for trout.

This makes me think I may try and produce my own trout fry from eggs in the basement from my brook and brown trout that spawn in the fall rather than purchase yearlings. Perhaps the water should be a little bit cooler for hatching though as in the 50's?

Thoughts?

I could have trout in my basement too!

...in the freezer!

Trout hatcheries are pretty common, all you'd need to do is ask someone who works at one or look online for any documents about their functions. If all else fails, there are a few good fish farming books out there that would probably list ideal temps. It sounds like you've already invested in the business a bit.

Brook & brown? Making Tiger trout are we ? lol. I love the display at the baltimore aquarium with the water fall pool filled with brook trout. I am envious of anyone that can keep them at home.
