Hey howdy y'all,

I'm originally from Charleston, SC but currently live in the Fayetteville, NC area. I started keeping tropical fish recently since my apartment is far too small to have a dog and I have come to really enjoy the hobby. In my search for possibilities of fish for a new tank, I came across the orange darter. I was so intrigued by the coloration and that it is a native fish, I started to give more consideration to the idea of making my next tank a native darter tank. Saw on Aquaria Central (the other fish forum I'm a member of) that the NANFA existed and decided to give it a looking at. Right now I'm not financially in a place where I can start my next tank but I wanted to get some knowledge on creating and maintaining a native tank.

Welcome. There is a lot of informaiton here. Use the serach function and cruise around the forum a little. We have all been where you are... amazed at a local native and thinking about a new tank... so there are some good posts out there to help you. Hope you have fun and sticka round for a while and learn more about the great natives that are our there... you are in a great spot. Lots of cool fish in that part of NC.

Welcome :) Darters were my first native fish, too. It's neat how when you look at them they look right back at you.
Our regional representative for North Carolina is Gerald Pottern. He knows a lot of cool local places to collect darters once you have your tank set up and your fishing license.

Tesselated, Piedmont, Sawcheek, and Swamp Darters are the ones you'll find around the Fayetteville area. Tesselated and Piedmont Darters are mainly in flowing gravelly/rocky streams, while Sawcheek and Swamp Darters are mainly in plant beds and leaf litter in slower water. Look up your neighbors CatfishCain and Auban on here.

If you ever get the urge to head back home, let me know. I have some great places around Charleston and maybe you can show me some more good spots down that way.

I thank all y'all for the welcome! It's great to see such a nice community of fish people on here. As for location things, as of right now, I'm praying and hoping that I will land this job back home in Charleston. No matter where I end up, I still am thinking about a darter native tank as my next tank, might see what freshwater stuff is close to Chucktown though, could do something along those lines too, I know of one part of the Dorchester River that wouldn't be too hard to fish in, not sure if there are any fish there though...
