Greetings all. A few hours ago something overtook me and I felt the uncontrollable desire to get back into native fish keeping after several years of taking a break from the hobby. I'm proud to live in as good a state for collecting as KY, and I'm going to try to catch some Flathead or Bowfin fry this summer.

Hello Pactolus. I'm the KY regional rep for NANFA. Welcome to the forum. You just missed an outing last weekend that myself and a few others took here in KY. What area are you in? What natives did you keep in the past?

What kind of fish are you looking to keep? There are some awesome fish here in KY. If you're looking for sunfish, the longear is great. If you're looking for shiners, Scarlet Shiners & Southern Red-Belly Dace are great in the aquarium, along with darters. You can check some common fish in KY @ my website www.kycreeks.com. I work in Lex and live in Richmond.

When I get my 30 gallon set up in a few days, I want to get a couple small catfish or bowfin. I like predators. I'm also planning on making a stream type aquarium in the near future with some darters. I've seen some tiny grey colored darters in a creek here in Fayette co, I intend to collect mine from there.

Do you know of a good place to collect a young bowfin (like 2 in.) ?

I have never seen a young bowfin, and have no idea where to start for those. I would suggest the KY River, and the mouths of feeder creeks. I hope you are prepared to move the bowfin to a larger tank or pond. They can get up to 4ft and 10lbs. Here are some other threads about bowfin, maybe some good info there

Catfish are kinda in the same boat. Unless you have madtoms, they get big and will need a new home.

I would expect the highest concentrations of bowfin are going to be in the western part of the state. Paducah area? Right now is the time to find juveniles.
