Has anyone knowingly, convincingly seen juvenile silver shiners? I ask because I think we've found about a dozen this week in the Flint River of Alabama whilst looking for adults (which have gotten really scarce with the onset of choking hot weather). I don't have a photo to post yet, they're about the size of scarlet shiners and superficially look like them, but with huge eyes and also the dead giveaway, black halfmoons around the nares. Putting them next to scarlet shiners makes them obvious just with eye size, both groups ~40 mm SL. Anyway, if anyone can add to this, thanks.

Try telling them apart in piles of atherinoides :) Half moons are a dead give away, even at 30 mm. Smaller than that, well, I just don't care. Looking to be sure would kill them anyway.

OK, you bucked up my confidence. There may be a very few emeralds in this system, but we haven't found any yet. The ones we have certainly seem to have the half moons. And thanks!
