Hi!
I have been out of the hobby for a while but am ready to get back into it. Wanting to take my daughters collecting, but realizing the regs had most likely changed in my time away, I consulted the most recent SC DNR manual. Naturally, it was confusing, so I contacted the Region 1 (Clemson) office, and they were a great help clarifying a few things. The biggest change was that unless a stream is expressly forbidden, ALL Region 1 watersheds up in the mountains are legal to collect at this time. Apparently there was an oversight in Columbia, and those waters will be free for nongame fish collection now through midsummer 2013. I was excited to hear this, as last I knew all those trout supporting watersheds were off-limits.
Hopefully this is useful news, not stale news, to my fellow Palmetto fish nerds.

Dustin,
I spoke to Dan Rankin in the Clemson office. We looked at some of the regs, and he also double checked a couple things with the law enforcement folks up there. He expects the trout watersheds to be off-limits again this time next year. I wouldn't blame you for double checking. I'd be inclined to do it, too!
Matt
P.S. Are there many people collecting in SC now? I haven't decided on what species, if any, I'd like to target right now, but I'd enjoy a trip out with other fish nerds. Especially if they welcome 10 and 5 year old daughters.

In the cooler months, Chip Rinehart and I, and more recently Stephen Beaman from Clemson, get our fairly regularly around the state. You and your daughters are welcome any time. If there are species you want to see, we can almost certainly show them to you.

If anyone is thinking of heading up into the mountains this fall, please let me know. I would like to pull a seine and get a look at what's up there while we have a chance. We are finally past the season of the northern visitors and I'm looking forward to more time for myself now. Also, I promised my son a trip upstate to collect some minerals for his collection and this way we could kill two birds with one stone (figuratively speaking, of course).

Howdy, all! My daughter and I went up to the SC mountains to do some hiking a couple days ago. (The old man and his daughter conquered Table Rock again!) Got me thinking about this proposed collecting trip. My schedule is almost always in flux, but does anybody have any days that they know would work for them? Would enjoy a chance to hit the streams with people who know what they're doing!
