Hi, I'm new to the forum, and I was hoping that someone would recognize this fish that I accidentally netted while sweeping a stream for macroinvertebrates. I apologize for the poor picture.

This picture was taken in a shallow stream in northern Indiana in August of this year.

Please and thank you!

Thank you Matt. I'd looked at Johnny Darter photos before, but I didn't think that my specimen seemed to show the key "X,W,X" pattern.

I don't think it's a Johnny darter since it lacks of X/W pattern so it might be other species. Maybe an Iowa Darter?

Iowa is certainly a possibility.

It looks like a Johnny to me. The w's and x's are badly formed and contain lots of gaps but that is not that uncommon. There is a set that follows the lateral line, with more in the upper region. Also the 6 dark regions along the top ridge. Compare to the one pictured here: http://ohiodnr.com/w...83/Default.aspx
