I've not found any articles with NANFA or NFC on this, and I came up empty on my forum search as well.

Has anyone here bred the redfin pickerel in captivity? If so, would you mind terribly relaying your experiences here?

I have a few bigger tanks (90g, 2x55g) that I wanted to set aside for breeding a predator species at the new house and I thought this would be a good one to try. I might even set up a couple of 300g stock tanks in the back yard for fair weather housing.

I know somebody here has gotten one to lay eggs once but I am pretty sure this is the extent of breeding that has been done with pickerel.

I have created my own captive population in a very small private swamp/shallow pond and under my aquaculture permit I sell the young that are produced out of this small pond. I don't think this is much help to you though since this is all outdoors done in a natural setting so not much help for aquarium spawning. But if you need some young brood stock in about early June, you know who to ask... Just kidding I certainly don't expect you to buy them from me besides these would be Esox americanus vermiculatus (Grass pickerel) not E. a. americanus (redfin pickerel).

My buddy got grass pickerel to spawn in a 75 gallon tank. It happened he moved in winter, so the tank was dark and 50 degrees for about two weeks. His new house the basement is chilly, and about 60 some degrees. The pickerel scattered eggs all over, but those died. A week later they did it again and those hatched. Like most Esox, the young became cannabilistic at a size around two inches, and he has only one left. I was not so lucky with mine. Small pike need lots of food, and I must have screwed up and not fed them enough. Or something else happened, but mine failed.

Luckily I am doing much better with my redfin young. I have access right now to blackworms, and my green sunfish never stop spawning.

I'm setting up a 150-gallon tank that I'm going to try and breed grass pickerels Esox americanus vermiculatus in.

Not really sure where, but I found something online or in a book that said that when a mat of grass was put in the aquarium with the picks, they spawned. So maybe it should be tested or something. The same article said that pickerel are often found in flooded grasslands, so breeding on grass might actually be a natural thing. I don't know if any of it is true though.

Edit: here, I found the article: http://www.nanfa.org...s/pickerel3.jpg
