Hello all,

I'm a new member of NANFA and new to keeping fishes. I have my first tank (a 20 gallon) on a fishless cycle now, and am looking forward to going out on a collecting trip as soon as it is ready. I've been stalking around on the forum for a few weeks and just joined officially. The organization seems to be an invaluable source of knowledge and advice, and I look forward to being a part of it!

I'm not too familiar with sites in SC, but I do know of a few good places down here in south Georgia if you are interested. I am studying at Georgia Southern University and just finished up an Ichthyology course in which we went out seining and electrofishing in several different areas. I am also doing an undergraduate research project on fish utilization of floodplain habitats on the Altamaha River, so I know a few good backwater sites as well. It has been very interesting so far, and should be getting even better now that the water levels are coming up.

I'm definitely game for a collecting trip later in the spring, let me know if you plan an outing!

Please reach out to me and the other NANFA folks in Georgia if you ever need any help... you would be surprised how far we are willing to travel just to help someone drag a seine...

This is something that I believe strongly that NANFA should do... support educators, students, DNR, etc. on projects that they have... to provide a service to these kind of people... to help advance our knowledge and our advocacy for our native fish (I will stop here before I get all philosophical about things).

Michael, if you're ever in Gwd to see the kids at Lander, maybe we could hit the waters. I'm pretty ignorant of good collecting spots, but I'm sure we could get some input from forum dwellers. Would enjoy hitting the backwaters out to help you on your interests, Krobill1. And I'm still hoping that SC mountain trip takes place. Of course, there's those pesky domestic obligations to try to dodge...

And yes, the Convention would be an awesome trip!

Its only an hour and a half for me Matt... and we could meet even somewhat west of you and cut the travel time down... so really any time you want to go out, you let me know and we will work it out... I have sure fire places over here in Athens that we can get Blueheads and yellowfins if you want to try that... if you got waders the fish are out there right now...

Standard hip waders, or chest waders? I'm needing an excuse to get some, haven't owned a pair in a long time. What type of credentials would I need to chase fish in GA?

I always ended up washing over the hip waders... so I would recommend chest. I wear them only a few months of the year, but these are the months. I have neoprene and would recommend against it... it is actually too hot for most of the year.

All you need in GA for non-game a.k.a bait fish, is a fishing license... not sure what the non resident costs are... but should be available on line.

Let me look into things, Michael. Will let you know when I can make it happen. Thanks for the input on the waders, too. Look forward to getting back to you in a couple/few days.
