Curatorial Keeper (Fishes and Marine Invertebrates)
BRANCH: Wildlife Health
HOURS OF WORK: 40 hours per week
SALARY RANGE: Start Rate: $27.69/hr. - 3 month: $29.54/hr. - 6 month: $30.77/hr.
BASIC FUNCTION: Reporting to the Technical Supervisor/Health Unit, performs general keeping duties in the Health Unit, in addition the incumbent will, under the direction of the relevant curator, assist in the management of the collection as well as training keepers and volunteers.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position may be assigned to, but is not restricted to, performing duties in the fish/marine invertebrates area.
Assists in the restraint and treatment of sick and injured animals.
Ensures that quarantine regulations are maintained.
Ensures that holding and support areas in the work area to which he/she has been assigned are in a proper state of cleanliness and order.
Observes the collection for signs of illness, indifference or injury and reports same.
In consultation with other staff, assists in establishing policies and procedures to improve the care of specimens,
Directs and trains staff in exhibit design, exhibit preparation and the husbandry requirements of the collection.
Assists with specimen transfers and movements.
Develops and conducts Keeper and Volunteer training programs and participates in education activities, presentations and tours related to the taxon.
Assists in the planning, acquisition and disposition of animals.
Assists in developing long term collection and conservation programs.
Maintains and orders equipment for the management of the collection.
Undertakes and assists with research projects.
Conducts analyses of the aquatic life support systems, including water chemistry analyses, as required.
Assists with the maintenance and collates collection of monthly reports and records.
During the absence of the Curator, may serve as his/her designate.
Other related duties as requested by Supervisor or the Curator.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must possess a B.Sc (in aquatic sciences prefered). A graduate degree or working towards a graduate degree is an asset.
Minimum 3 years' keeping experience or equivalent experience and qualifications in the practical care of fishes and aquatic life support systems.
Must be able to meet the physical demands of the job.
An excellent understanding of Zoo operations, operating procedures, exhibit design and collection management, staff training needs and techniques, equipment and its upkeep, animal husbandry, ecology and conservation.
Must possess good organizational skills, be a self starter and have the ability to work with minimal supervision.
Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Must have ability to produce accurate, complete and comprehensive written reports.
Must be able, and possess the confidence to, make verbal presentations to staff and public.
Must be proficient in the English language.
Must have working knowledge of WHMIS legislation, the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and
Toronto Zoo Safety Policy.
Excellent & current technical knowledge of aquatic biology and fish culture techniques to encompass fresh, marine and brackish water systems.
Excellent & current technical knowledge of aquatic life support systems with a strong knowledge of chemistry and laboratory techniques.
