Hello all -

Have recently become very interested fascinated in native species fish as well as native aquatic plants.

I keep a number of tropical tanks and my next tank will be -- for sure-- native species.

Although I haven't been long in discovering NANFA I am totally blown away by what I find.....

There is no doubt I will be spending a lot of time on your site and your forum in my quest to learn more about the natives.

I live in the Chancellorsville Battlefield just outside of Fredericksburg, Virginia with some fascinating wildlife, streams and rivers very close at hand.

Welcome Tracey,

I believe that we ahve a number of members not too far from you and you certainly do have some very interesting habitat in your part of the country. I think you will find that there is a lot fo information here to be shared about our native, and by that I mean your native, fishes.

Also the Potomac Valley Aquarium Society has some pretty cool members. Here is an article by Bob Bock, who took a sunfish to a bowl show: http://www.pvas.com/...l-megalotis.php

Hi Tracey, Welcome to NANFA! I just moved from Fredericksburg to Blacksburg in August so I know the area very well (and used to work at the Petco a few miles down the road!). Feel free to ask me if you have questions, and if you are interested in a collecting partner I would be happy to meet up sometime when I am in town visiting.

Thank you all for the welcome!

Erica: Yes I am aware of the Raleigh Event, Gerald posted some great information regarding the event on another forum and there is some real interest from myself and a few others out of Richmond. I REALLY want to attend the Friday collection, but I still have to work a few things out to make it happen... It must be really exciting for your club as the dates draw closer - that is going to be a SUPER weekend!

Derek - I KNOW YOU!!!..... I use to frequent Petco often when you and Malik worked there, it's not the same since you guys left. Once when I stopped by you gave me a huge bag of Frogbit and I still have a bunch in my tanks (I love that stuff). I'm sure if you saw me you would remember me, we talked fish quite a bit.... Absoultely when you are back in the area let me know and I'd love to collect with you... Did you collect on the Rappahanock or Rapidan or both?

I've heard it is a totally different place since most of the old crew jumped ship, mostly resulting from management change. I'm glad you're enjoying your frogit. It is among my favorite plants, and this past summer I was volunteering to DGIF at Lake Chickahominy and came across some growing in a marshy area around the edge of the lake. This frogbit had reddish coloration around the edges and small spots on the leaves. I thought that was kinda neat.

I've been collecting in the Fredericksburg area for around 7 years so I have had time to explore the Rappahannock, Rapidan, and many other streams in the area. The larger rivers are great for snorkeling in clear water, and very good for some species, but I often found myself in off-the-beaten-path areas trying to dig up something unique. If you need help finding a species you're interested in nearby, I'd be happy to help guide you. The forum is a wealth of information, and there are some good resources that will help out on any quests you may wish to partake in. I'm in the process of (slowly) summarizing my trip reports from the past year, most of which are from right around there. Keep an eye out for that, I just posted another one :)

I will be in contact next time I am in the area and can get away for some time in the water.
