New to the site from northern NJ. I have a 1,000 gal koi pond that isnt stocked to heavily. Biggest koi is 10 inches. The rest are somewhat small, I don't know what type of natives i can stock with no problems. Can natives like bluegills or pumpkinseeds survive winters? Pond is 2 1/2 feet deep. I live next to large reservoir and some streams with the usual sunfish crappie perch bullhead LM bass pickerel, even some migratory white perch and gizzard shad. Yet I have no clue what type of minnows/darters and such i have around me. Help would be appreciated. What can I stock?

I kept a Yellow Perch in my mother's pond in PA for years to keep it from becoming overpopulated with baby koi.

Yes, sunfish will live under the ice. I had p-seeds in Cleveland in a small pre-formed pand that survived and thrived. If they can survive winter in Cleveland...

I figured it would be safe to put some panfish or perch. Will these fish spawn?

What large reservoir do you live by? I live down by Princeton myself but I like to run up to the northwest part of the state near the gap for hiking and exploring I usually drive up rte 31 to rte 46 passing by Spruce Run. You should be able to catch plenty of Black Nosed Dace in any decent sized stream or river near you. Our darter selection isn't all that great in NJ, I've caught plenty of Tessellated Darters in the Delaware and Millstone rivers but have yet to run into any Shield or Swamp Darters. I've also caught a variety of shiners out of the Delaware. I'll be headed back up to the Walpack area to do some hiking and sampling in the streams up there in the spring and I'm easy to talk into a sampling trip.

I live in Union County on the Clark Reservoir. Rahway river. All i think i have is tesselated darters near hear but im sure Ill find more. Im a BIG fisherman and i Often fish in Rahway or Clark. Im pretty young, 15, and am down by the river every day pretty much. So I think i have caught a good chunk of available species. Besides the small guys. Still trying to convince my father to bring me somewhere with a better variety of small native aquarium fish. Im interested in getting permission from the state for scientific collecting(big seines, nets, fish tagging). With my results i am going to publish to someone to display on the river organization website and try to work with the NJ dep F&W to cleanup the union county area.

Likely you will have to wait until you are 18 (though it wouldn't hurt to ask) but you may be able to volunteer for your state fisheries biologists. If you have intentions of going into fisheries science as a career it is a great place to start. And you'll get to see some cool stuff regardless.

The NJDEP Department of fish and wildlife is having a freshwater fisheries forum on Saturday, February 23, 10:00 AM at Batsto Village.
I went to one last fall, and it was a great opportunity to meet the state biologists face to face.
I'm sure they will be happy to talk with you and give you some guidance.
