So I was bored during my lunch break and got out my cellphone to record some video of our checkered madtom swimming around after feeding. Included in the video is also some footage of a red spotted sunfish and a creek chubsucker (the chubsucker has been getting dominated by the madtom, so it's probably time we found some bigger food for the madtom). Apologies for the poor lighting, my cellphone video camera isn't that great(480p) and the room was dark with the only light coming from the aquarium.

I can watch this checkered madtom all day long, he's definitely one of my favorites. He's also probably to blame for the disappearance of our redfin shiners. Eh, he's cool, so he gets to stay. -Justin

Awesome coloration! My tadpole madtom is looking quite boring in comparison. :-s

Very cool. The checkered madtom is a favorite of mine as well. In my opinion, it is one of the nicest US catfishes being so large (for a madtom) and boldly patterned. When I first got interested in native fishes and was looking through the books, it was one of the species that really stood out to me. I made several unsuccessful trips looking for them before I finally found one.

That's one good lookin' fish! I think I'd over look a few redfins on his account, too.
