I have a question about temps. First a little introduction...I've been keeping fish and aquaponics for about a year (not eating the fish...just the veggies). Anyway, I've become very interested in Native species and am planning on changing my aquaponics setup to a native tank later in the year.

However, I would love to setup a small 20g stream tank right now upstairs and stock it from locally caught fish. My main concern is about temperature. My house in the summer ranges 77-81 or so. Is that too hot for stream fish in my area? What could I keep and what couldn't I? I would mainly be looking for fish in all the tributaries to the chattahoochee around atlanta but may branch out to other rivers in the area.

First of all, welcome to another Georgian!

I live in the Athens area, and while I keep my house may a little cooler in the summer time, there are a ton of fish from the north Atlanta area that you can certainly keep happily at room temperature.

Surf around here on the forum and you will see that there are a lot of discussions about fishes for a 20 gallon. Also do a search on the word "chattahoochee" using the search function here and you should see several thread that show some pictures... including some of a trip we took in the Johns Creek area. In a 20 gal, you could have a few shiners... or you could try a few southern studfish... and with either of those maybe a couple of blackbanded darters if you want it to be a real local tank.

Let me know when you are interested in getting out, we are often out in the North Atlanta area and could help you in your collecting.

Thanks for the help! I will certainly search for those threads and look up those fish. Please keep me in mind if you go collecting around this area as I would definitely like to join. I'm free any weekend and can get off work most weekdays. Thanks!

I will try to keep you on mind and add you to my Georgia mailing list. You should also go over to the main website www.nanfa.org and consider joining NANFA.

There are a couple of opportunities coming up on April 6 and April 20. I will forward these to you via email. And you should also consider joining us at the Convention in Kentucky in May.

Don't forget me, if you aren't too far inland!
