We are using webcams to remotely monitor multiple female bluegill without disturbing them. This has proven to be a labor saver. To see how it works go to www.mydlink.com, for user ID enter "wetzelj@lincolnu.edu" and for password enter "cultigen". We usually have one unit over hour teaser tank at all times and during day when colleting spawns we move tow other cameras from tank to tank with females as they are mated to different males. System works for other species as well. Newer cameras in use may actually be able to see eggs if camera placed close enough.

I can log on using Google Chrome but it is a slow connection. You need to have Java loaded as it is a Java based server link. There are three links to view once you get there and going from one to the other does not work well. It is best to go each link and then reload the web page. This works best. Video is very slow or they have it set to take a picture about once a second.

I also tried it using Internet Explorer 9. It required an active-x program to be installed. I did not get sound using Google Chrome but I get intermittent sound using IE9 (on for a second and then off for a second) probably related to very slow server connection. It sounds like white noise.

Even when in same building, images coming to my computer come through internet as smooth flowing video. White noise coming from heat pumps and light fixtures. We have a lot of equipment running. We are locally blessed with fast internet service provide. The last camera (31122584) is best for what we will want to show. Females generally only able to get to nest from 0800 to 1600 so that is best interval to watch if connection is good.

In the same building is not the same as across the US. I have a fast computer and an internet speed of 35 mbps.

We upgraded our bandwidth so hopefully video streams better. Breeding colony hopping today.

Type in "wetzelj@lincolnu.edu" for email and "cultigen" for password. We currently have two webcams observing a sunfish breeding colony. If you have a really fast connection, movement will appear natural. If slow connection, then movement will look like stop motion or even worse.
