Not really sure if there is any point in trying to ID this but curiosity has the best of me.
Collected from Deer Creek Will County Illinois last weekend.
I have collected the following lepomis from this stream system in the past:
L. machrochirus
L. cyanellus
L. gibbosus

Greengill would be my guess

Looks almost exactly like one I caught with Gerald in PA last summer. It currently resides in a nature center tank so i can't get a pic right now, but a friend recently shot it for a magazine article so I'll try to get him to send me a pic to put up for comparison. Mine has a more distinct "Bluegill spot" on the dorsal, and the white leading edges of the ventrals scream Green on mine, but otherwise almost identical. Greengill would be my guess as well.

I can't disagree it's probably a green-gill but I guess I want to know "why". Everyone can see the green sunfish part (even though it lacks white edges and distinct darkening of the posterior of the anal and second dorsal fins) but I'm not sure I really see the bluegill part. Small-ish mouth? Flanks resembling a sub-adult Bluegill? Long-ish pectoral fin? I'm not trying to be obtuse, but to me it has the body shape of a Green Sunfish (along with the opercular tab) but otherwise I can't see the other half.

The mouth does look a bit too small to be pure green.

It could always be just a slightly unusual green; all greens aren't identical.

Looks like a green x pumpkinseed...but then again they are very identical to green-gills. I do see the dark spot in the dorsal fin. The mouth appeared to have missing a maxillary.

The pattern on the body screams pseed to me personally, but I still wouldn't be shocked if it were just a greengill

Here is a greengill I caught in a system (Illinois River) without pumpkinseed.

I think it is definitely a green sunfish X bluegill. It looks exactly like the one we get in one of our lakes that only has those two sunfish in it. They get mistaken for pumpkinseeds a lot. Check out my gallery for some pics of some from our collection.

It can be hard to tell as they can display more traits of one of the two fish than the other. The main signs are the presence of the iridescent line, like the one found on the green's gill, but it has a less distinct line to it and is wider. That orange color behind the broken vertical bars is another trait usually found on the hybrids.

The posterior dorsal spot is present on your fish (albeit rather indistinct), which is a pretty good indicator of Bluegill, and coloration like that is mood dependent so at times it may look more "Bluegillish" than it does in that pic..

Took a while, but here's a pic of one we caught last summer in the Pennypack Creek, Delaware River watershed. Very similar to the photo you posted Uland.

Green x pumpkinseed

I don't think so.
You can't see it in that pic, but the fish has a distinct black spot on the anterior dorsal fin. That's a Bluegill characteristic.

This is a Green hybrid from Texas I caught. Thought it was a Green-redear but not sure.

I would diagnose that one as a greenseed personally, based on the body pattern. Very handsome fish.
