Did you catch this? If so, where?

I'm going to guess and go with Bluegill, there is to much glare on the fish to really tell for sure. Don't worry most of us too really bad pictures at first too, you'll get better the more pictures you take

well i thought bluegill at first too, but then relized the body is too elongated to be a gill

I don't believe a proper ID can ever be obtained from this photo.
Photos taken in water with erect fins are best but at the very least photos in focus, lacking reflective glare, with partially erect fins can be suitable.

Photos like this can provide hours of conjecture and wild speculation and not much else.

I don't know if its just me, but you can kinda see brown spots in the photo on the fish which could mean it could be a pumpkinseed. Better pictures are most likely needed before this fish can be id'ed

I've caught baby sunfish that looked exactly like in NJ myself. It's either going to be a bluegiill or pumpkinseed. The rest of the other native species in the state wouldn't look like that and it's not a green sunfish. Owain4 may be right on the pumpkinseed though, I've caught and kept little sunfish like that thinking they were baby bluegills and they turned out to be pumpkinseeds.

Bonus points to me for mentioning green sunfish without mentioning a green hybrid.
