Hello, I'm new to native fish and am trying to learn as much information on species I would like to keep. What catfish is best for a beginner using a 55 gallon standard aquarium. Thanks I advance.

The only native cats suitable for a 55 would be one of the Madtom species. Even Bullheads get longer than the shortest dimension on a 55.

With that being said, madtoms are very beautiful and interesting creatures. It's like having a baby catfish that never outgrows your tank. Here is a link to images of madtoms on the NANFA gallery. You can click 'Show all 94' for more pictures. http://gallery.nanfa...aultSettings]=1

Here is an example one, photo taken by Nate Tessler:

Well, two things

1. Check your local laws. Worst case scenario, pick a madtom species not found in your state so it's not a 'native' fish. If it's not found in your state and if it's for an aquarium and not a pond, often the wildlife department treats them like ornamental/tropical fish. A good way to find out is to call and ask.
2. Vendors I'm aware of:

http://www.aquacultu...re.com/Catfish/
http://btdarters.com...talogs_fish.htm

I think most of those links are for wild caught fish. If you are interested in captive breeding madtoms, there is some information here: http://www.cerc.usgs...m_Spawning.html

Yeh, because of the weird Tennessee laws I was going to get fish that weren't technically native to Tennessee but to the U.S.
