hey folks! i had to move my cray from my 55 gal. as she was tearing up my plants too much. i placed her in a 5 gal. w/ a bubbler and some fake plants w/ gravel substrate. i put some fish tank water in for the beneficial bactiria. should i have a filtration system in there as well? is it even necessary? thanks for your input.

Yes you'll need filtration, Crayfish can be killed by ammonia buildup just like any other fish. Talking from experience since I use a 5 gallon tank for young crayfish keep an eye on the tank. Because it is only 5 gallons it will get dirty a lot faster then a larger tank.

Fish water does not contain the bacteria you want. They live on surfaces, not in the water column. Putting a handful of gravel from the old tank will do much more than the water did.

i did one better. i rinsed out one of my filters into the tank. should do the job.

The choice of filtration is up to you jack as there are many types of filter options. But I would recommend staying away from sponge filters in a crayfish tank as the crayfish will eventually pick apart the sponge. Just my experience...

It'll take them a long time to do that. I would actually recommend a sponge if you're intending to raise babies, as they will crawl everywhere and tend to get caught in pump intakes.
