Not sure if this is a type of breeding behavior my swamp darters were doing?

Yeah, it looks like it. That's similar to the behavior seen here:

You could try putting them in their own tank for a few days, then putting them back in this community tank. Maybe a week later you'll see fry in the spawning tank. If the adults are left in the same tank they spawned in, they could eat the eggs.

I have two swamp darters in a 10 gal and all they do is chase each other. Actually only one does the chasing. I plan on adding one or two more and hopefully get some of the same activity you have.

If you search for "orangethroat darter courtship and spawning" on youtube, that's the name of the one I posted.

I should separate into a different aquarium with some sand

I should separate into a different aquarium with some sand

And get some live food cultures. Examples of good food for baby fish include microworms, daphnia, moina, rotifers (you can find them in vials of dry hatchable cysts online), baby brine shrimp (similarly hatchable from egg cysts). I got my initial starter cultures from aquabid.com.

It helps to put a plant in the fry tank. I have much better luck rearing fry in a tank with a rapidly growing plant. Here is a video demonstrating how easy spare tanks can be:

Its name on youtube is "Holding aquarium / bucket tank".

Check out Table 2. Plants eat even 26 ppm of ammonium in 4 hours: http://www.theaquari...ical_Filtration
