Northern/southern redbelly dace?

These two fish were caught in an unnamed, small lake Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario. The specific lake is in the middle of the triangle formed by Wisp Lake, Claude Lake, and Parkside Bay.

Peterson field guide says you have northern redbelly and finescale dace in Ontario, but not southern redbelly. It also says that finescale x northern hybrids (all female) are quite common.

Interesting. The snout on the two specimens that I caught appears much shorter than the jaws in these photographs of NRD...http://www.seagrant....d=605&FishID=95

Does it look like a hybrid? It may be the angle of the photograph hiding the true prominence of the 2nd lateral stripe.

Cant help with id but its kinda goofy looking with such a short face. Im used to my local black nosed & long nosed daces.

Looks like a normal northern redbelly to me.
