I've been keeping fish on and off for over 30 years. I grew up in Florida collecting both freshwater and saltwater fish and critters with my family, and after years of keeping exotics, have gone back to native fishes. I now have two 50G custom-built systems that I'm setting up as native fish biotopes, one SW and one FW. I'm looking forward to learning more about native fishes here and maybe even picking up some captive-bred livestock at some point!

Welcome aboard! Where abouts in NC are you located? We have a number of good and active members from NC, and I'm in SW Virginia fairly close to the border. We look forward to having you participate!

Hi, I'm in North Carolina, too. Our regional representative is Gerald Pottern, who is very nice and also extremely knowledgeable about streams to explore. You can meet him in person at the Raleigh Aquarium Society meetings: http://www.raleighaq...enandwhere.html

You might find this useful: it's a guide to what species are found in what river basins in North Carolina. An Excel spreadsheet opens if you click on 'FRESHWATER FISH BY RIVER BASIN': http://portal.ncdenr.../bau/nativefish

Thanks for the welcome, everybody!

I live in Goldsboro, about an hour southeast of Raleigh. I've actually met Gerald before, Erica! I had some captive-bred blackbanded sunnies from MD that I was giving him for a friend who breeds them (this was back before I decided to go back to keeping natives exclusively). He's a really, really nice guy and we had fun talking shop for almost an hour.

It's hard for me to get to the meetings on account of my location and work schedule, but I'd like to come to one someday. I definitely would like to go on a collecting trip one of these days. I still can't pass a body of water (even just a ditch) without wanting to dip a net into it. ;)

Hi

I'm in Wilmington on weekends and Morehead City during the week so can help you with fresh and salt water collecting in either area. Perhaps somewhere in between.

Fritz

Greetings ... I was hoping we'd see you on here eventually.
July 20 (Sat) is the RAS picnic at Umstead Park north of RDU airport if you can join us. We can go seining after we eat.
Your chaeto's are now in Missouri with Mike Hellweg who spoke at our Raleigh conference in Feb.

Thanks Gerald, glad to hear they're doing well. They are such beautiful little fish!

I always seem to end up working on the same Saturdays that anything aquarium-related takes place, but I'll try to make it!
