I have been reading up on different sunfish species and it seems like the orange spotted sunfish is a relatively mellow/not aggressive fish. In a 55g, how many would be suitable to that size tank and if only doing a couple of these, then is it best to have 2 males or a male and a female?

Are you intending to breed them?

I've had 5 in a 55 gal. tank and they were fine, I'd imagine you could go a little higher than that.

I've kept them mostly as a single species tank. But even as mellow as they are compared to other larger sunfish, they'll go after shiners that are even slightly smaller than they are with bad consequences.

I've kept o-spots with northern longear (L. peltastes) and dollar sunfish, all of similar size, with no problems. The trick was to keep the tank stocking pretty dense, about 20 - 25 sunfish in a 180 gallon.

My experience was that o-spots were not agressive, but were very willing to stand their ground and not be pushed around. Everyone found their space and peace reigned, even while breeding. As Bruce noted above, if it fits in their mouth, its fair game.

All in all a great fish and were part of one of my favorite setups.

true about if it fits in their mouth, that is just about true for most fish. Does anyone know where I might find those for sale right now. otherwise I will have to wait a couple of months for another members stock to become available.
