Has anyone heard of or seen any of their male, nuptial shiners cast off (or slough) the skin on their heads surrounding tubercles? I have a mixed species display that has a 3 terminal males that are suspect of this 'skin-like' looking piece of debris I saw in the tank yesterday. There are some fired up Spotfin shiners that I believe produced this ~1"x1", clear with white dots piece of skin. The white spots appeared to be convex/concave depending on which side they were viewed from. The rest of the 'skin' looked like and had the same consistency of a newt's skin when it sheds. I should have removed it and photographed it for verification purposes. It got snagged on a small branch when I spotted it.

I know a lot of fish periodically slough their skin and wonder if this was the case for large male shiners. Can anyone verify this?

Thanks.
Nick L.
