A friend sent me this great picture of some cyprinids spawning in a creek in New Jersey and wants me to identify them. I don't have a good fish key for that area. Can anyone help me identify them?

Looks an awful lot like a white shiner but they don't appear to be found in New Jersey.

Seems that it would be Common Shiner Luxilus cornutus based on the range maps in my Petersons, and a similar picture that I have of a similar species...
that bluish head and the pinkish fin margins... seems that it would fit...

Sure is a beautiful fish to be called "common".

In my experience it is one of the less common minnows that I catch around here.

Thanks for the replies - I agree that they are probably common shiners. That was going to be my guess but I wanted some confirmation. As for the name, in the scinetific world, the word "common" is used for a species that is widespread in it's distribution - i.e., the common shiner is common to the Atlantic coast, Mississippi and St. Lawrence drainages.
