I live in Edmonton.Alberta Canada.I currently am not keeping any native fish species, but have kept several over the years.I had the privlidge of growing up in Illinois where lots of cool fish species are.I have plans to set up an Illinois and Alberta aquarium this summer and will be collecting in both places.

Welcome!

As you saw in a previous thread, Alberta has a large legal barrier in our quest for keeping natives. However, I found out that there are some chain stores that will stock perch. I haven't heard about minnows, catfishes, other perch-type fish, suckers and so on.

Thanks for your reply.I am not sure if they are native to here or if you would be interested but you can buy flathead minnows here. They are sold as feeder called rosey reds. There are always some in the bunch that have the more natural dark color.I kept some a few years back in a species only tank and they were a real hoot.Very under rated little fish.

Yeah, fathead minnows are native to Alberta... I believe. Very easy to breed. I was looking into them as feeders, but apperently they have high amount of thiaminase. They are cool fish in their own right. I never heard of them being called rosy red though.

Rosey reds are a color variant of the fathead minnow that is sold in pet stores as feeders.

My son is living just below you a couple of hours. LaCombe. He will be graduating there in a few weeks and I will be there. Then in July he gets married in Kelowna BC and then I will be there. Seems he may settle not far from where you are. Too cold for this cajun boy. Welcolme to the site and enjoy. And if you have any questions of shipping fish or the sorts feel free to e-mail me. By the way I live in Ooltewah Tennessee just east of Chattanooga now.
