I'm thinking of starting a 10 gallon darter tank. From what I can tell the river darters that I am aiming to own (probably a species tank for rainbow darters) are always accompanied by rocks, so I am planning on having some in my aquarium. Will largish (perhaps a few pounds?) rocks be a problem in any way if placed on the base of the aquarium?

Lay down a half inch to an inch of sand or other substrate under the rocks and they will disperse its weight.

You could use some light diffusion egg crate under the substrate

I have never had any problem with rocks in the aquarium, other than portaging the nice ones back to my truck...

Never blew out a tank bottom.

Fear not!
Check out this video, note him standing on the rocks at the end....

Hope that helps!

EDIT with a PS - in my larger tanks I use egg crate just to keep the rocks from sliding around if they're dug out from under. I place my huge rocks on egg crate first and then fill in the substrate around the base.. so if you're looking to precariously pile that may help too.
