Hello all. My name is Corey and I'm from Kentucky. I have always been a active outdoors man but just recently became introduced to some of are smaller native fish like the darter. I currently have a 36 gallon native tank and plan to build a riffle/community tank soon. I was thinking of starting with a fourty gallon tank (in the link below). It measures36x18x16 Any advice is appreciated.

Welcome, Corey! My first piece of advice would be to try to duplicate a riffle near you. Take home rocks, sand, driftwood - whatever you find on site. Get some water movers too, you know - those powerheads with propellers.

My first piece of advice would be to contact Josh Blaylock. He is the KY Rep. and is playing in streams quite a bit.

Thanks. I have my 36g sit up with native rocks and wood. Im just wanting to get some water movement for my darters. I have talked to Josh he told me to come check out nanfa and here i am. His website (kycreeks.com) is what made realize how many darters we have in ky. Is that a good size tank for what im wanting to do?

Yes, 36 long and 18 wide will give you a good foot print for establishing a darter tank... its big enough to be relatively stable form a water chemistry standpoint and the surface area will help keep up the oxygenation.

You can do a lot with a tank that size. I am a fan of shallower tanks though. I think a 30 long could support about the same amount of fish. Same footprint. Not sure what the cost difference is. You could have a half dozen darters, and a nice size school of shiners in it comfortably. Sounds like a fun project.
