Our local fishclub is having to move to a new location. The location is a nature preserve and one of the requirements is that the club has a minimum of two talks per year, open to the public and dedicated to natives,,,, How about the luck of that???? The drive will be a bit further but well worth it! Just thought I'd share the good news! Gonna need to put together some more NANFA based programs....

Don't you dare to leave out the ugly little bassturds like the pirate perch! If you want to show cool and kinky video, then I can loan you one showing pirate perch getting down. They are in Iowa as well. The pretty stuff gets too much love and it is not fair. Darters, whatever dude.

Oh come on... I know there are other native fish besides darters.... there are walleye and perch also!!! 
Actually, I'd like to put together a program highlighting our T/E fish, causes behind their declines, examples from other states/cities of methods being used to rehab their waterways, volunteer programs and how to get involved within our state etc.

In addition to stressing colors and table-fare qualities, behaviors can make even the more mundane species look very interesting. I was not even considering conservation status of something like pirate perch in Iowa, rather the way the animals move about, their peculiar way of detecting prey, and their reproductive biology. Even some of the minnows are cool in those regards. I have a very difficult time convincing my audiences about the merits of conservation a population just because something is rare. Pretty helps, tasty is even better, but simply getting audience to wrap their mind around the critters as to how they are uniquely adapted with actual examples puts you well into getting them interested in what is out there. I want my audience to leave into the world after an interaction and try to imagine the world as a species I introduced them to might experience it. Most of my audiences are kids so they do adapt easier such efforts.

Centrarchid, I have never seen a pirate perch here, I suppose they must be near one of the "coasts" (checked - yup, east coast). Looked on the fish atlas for the state - "The pirate perch is listed as a species of special concern in Iowa (571 IAC 77.2(3) (2004)). It only occurs in scattered locations along the upper pools of the Mississippi River and in the lower Cedar River watershed of the Eastern Broadleaf Forest Aquatic Subregion. Recent collections have not found the pirate perch at many earlier survey sites indicating a decline in distribution and abundance (Harlan et al. 1987)." Hmmm...

Centra, there will be a number of opportunities to speak about various types of fish, environmental impacts, collecting, husbandry, etc... as I posted earlier the requirements will be twice a year to do a public speaking. The purpose I felt of bringing up the rarity was not so much the fact that we're losing "pretty fish" as much as how a number of these fish are water quality indicators and how it can eventually impact us consuming and/or having recreation those waters.
OS yes I changed it a short while ago. I figured why not have Iowa darters as the avatar for the Iowa rep. And yes, EIAA is the club. Thanks for posting the info on the pirate perch. I am aware of their status here and was going to post something similar but I appreciate your input!
