The Vermilion Darter is an Endangered species only found in a short stretch of Turkey Creek outside Birmingham, Alabama. An old dam in Turkey Creek will be removed and that should expand the species' range in Turkey Creek. The link is to a good local TV news story, working with the Freshwater Land Trust.

That is a good report. I think one of its strengths is the approach taken by the reporter and Freshwater Land Trust. There is, truthfully, very little unbiased media, as any attempt to communicate carries some prejudice, whether in content, media, or presentation. Here, the potential for fish-friendly folks such as ourselves to be misperceived and/or discounted is very much a reality. This story could have been presented in an approach that would largely be perceived as a panning of the dam and its creators as evil and as leftist wing-nuts shrieking about saving "some dumb fish". Acknowledging the benevolent, productive intent behind the structure and how those intents could be furthered by its removal goes a long way to making this project be of value to those who would normally be indifferent or resentful towards the $150K price tag. There are times for hardline, authoritative, even nasty deliveries of messages, but generally you still get more flies with honey, and I would hope more pro-fish initiatives are presented this way.
