i found out about this method about 6 months ago on an arabic aquarium forum.

apparently, you can use vitamin c to remove chlorine.
here is something i found online, in english.
http://www.20somethi...with-vitamin-c/

its being used in municipal systems as well.

it was a chemist in saudi arabia who turned me onto it.
for those leery of chemicals, this might be a better option.

20 bucks can buy enough to treat 12-13 thousand gallons, so its cost effective too.

I remember when I was working at Petco we started getting the "Tanked" or "ATM" brand aquarium chemicals and I was really really confused when their dechlorinator was labelled as being ascorbic acid. I think I tried to research it and found nothing at the time. Very cool!

It works. It also works fast in an emergency, like forgetting you have water running into a tank, going upstairs, watching TV, and falling asleep. Hammered it with C, and all lived. 12 hours later.

I've never actually lost fish due to chlorine. Sometimes I dechlorinate and sometimes I don't. At this point I dechlorinate every time because WeCo DeChlor is $4 for 4 ounces and lasts me as many years. But yeah, never had any problems with the chlorine.

(D'oh. My tanks are plant filtered. The bacterially filtered tanks would have a terrible time with dechlorinator. Duh. Whoops)

The best solution is aged water. That reminds me, I need to find out why my water barrel has quit feeding...

Does it also work for chloramines? You can age chlorine out of the water, but chloramines are there to stay unless you remove them. I know my water has both chlorine and chloramines, so I use Seachem Prime to treat the water that goes in my tanks.

it works for chloramines as well.

the part i like about it is that its pretty safe, wont mess with your water chemistry much, and its generally good for fish.
and it wont mess with bacteria either.

i never lost any fish due to chlorine in planted tanks either, but i had bright lights on them, and only ever did top offs. so, not much chlorine gets added, and to my understanding, the bright lights helps to dissipate the chlorine, even chloramines.
i HAVE seen chloramines dissipate pretty fast when left out doors in the sun... if this were not the case, my fairy shrimp would never have made it when i used untreated water. they are extremely sensitive to chlorine, top offs with untreated water would always kill them.

but for setting up a brand new tank with water that i KNOW has chloramines, ill probably go with vitamin c from now on.
sometimes you dont have time to age the water, especially with tank leaks and other such emergencies.
