He is a good lookin' fish. Really like those white tips/border on his lower hemisphere fins. Perfect name, too.

I've caught a ton of warmouth over the years and have never seen one as good looking as Sandwich.  Of course, they all were yanked out of the water, unhooked, and released after a brief inspection period (admiration, maybe some parasite removal if need be, etc.), so not exactly the type of treatment that would put them in such a colorful mood.  Kind of like being yanked from home to the dentist chair!

He's very pretty. Is there anything in particular you do to maintain his colors? My little baby has a pretty blue tinge around his gills, and I'd like to keep it there. Plus, his patterns are bold and nice.

Nothing special really... he lives in that 58 gallon tank (alone)... with that live amazon sword plant... and the one sponge filter... so I think the water quality is pretty good.  And then he eats mostly Hikari Massivore Pellets... so those seem to be fulfilling his nutritional needs (both for him to grow as well as to develop and maintain color)... that's what he is attacking to eagerly in the video.

Apparently the lengthening days and somewhat warmer air temps have turned Sandwich's mind to love. And although he lives alone he has decided to excavate under the sword nearly to the glass. And clouded the tank completely in the process.

I've also concluded that the white on the bottom edge of his fins is not genetic coloration. It is environmental. He is scubbing his fins in the substrate. Look closely he even has done this to the bottom tip of his caudal.

Ha, he has made a mess of your tank, but at least he's a great-looking fish. I really don't know either way about the cause of the white edges on the fins, but this individual from the cement pond seems to show a similar pattern:

That is a pretty fish, I have a question. Can a single orange spotted male sunfish live in a 26 with a school or weed or blackchin shiners, a couple handed killies and like 5 Iowa darters, with ghost shrimp?

Ha, he has made a mess of your tank... the cause of the white edges on the fins, but this individual from the cement pond seems to show a similar pattern: 

It's HIS tank and if you don't believe hi he will flare those gill plates and show you how big he is.

Your picture is interesting but still might be environmental... Maybe make warmouth all scrub their fins up?

Note the orange-red spot at base of rays on dorsal fin.  I wish I could see in UV those bluish spots on flanks.

Are you suggesting that Sandwich needs a blacklight?  That would be groovy. What would we see?

Mine also has the white fin edges, though not the cadual, and upon closer inspection they do look a bit worn down. Does this mean that mine is definitely a male? I haven't seen any nesting behavior, not yet, but he might be a bit young. 

I'm surprised more people don't keep these guys. They're easy to get, have some nice colors, are very intelligent, and are very unfussy fish.
