Well, since it's nearing the end of winter, I thought i'd break out some stuff, take pics of my natives, etc. and get ready for collecting.

ATM, leftover from last year, I only have one bullhead, a tadpole madtom, and my favorite smallmouth bass. I've had the bass for a while now, and it's come to be one of my favorite fish:

I hope to sell some of what I catch this year- last year was mainly for "fun", and along the way I raised a few fish and kind of studied bass.. not a whole lot though.

Nice set up,

I've always had problems keeping SMB, but that fish looks very healthy. So what kind of bullhead is it?

Come to think of it, I actually have two bullheads (black). I have one about 5 inches, and one 2 incher that I haven't seen for about a month until now. They're not in the same tank atm.

He wanted to eat badly tonight I guess. I'd tap my finger at one end of the tank, and he'd shoot on over.

I could not help but notice your comment on selling fish. I feel the need to tell you that without proper permits the selling of native fish is illegal. Nice SMB though, great looking fish. Smallmouths are one of my favorite fishes, I'll give them a try at some point.

So what permit would I need to sell darters? At this point, that's mainly what people are interested in, otherwise i'll just stick with selling vallisneria. I kept trying to find links but I can't get a whole lot of info, i'm going to be 16 at the end of the summer just about.

That really depends on your state. I would contact your DNR, and ask them what is needed. In some states the permits are fairly inexpensive, in others they are cost prohibitive for this market.

An example is Ohio where skipjack and I both have such permits and for a bait dealers license it is only $40 annually. This permit/license allows you to sell darters, minnows, killifish, sticklebacks, mudminnows, sculpins, and suckers under 6" that you catch with a legal sized seine as long as they are not an endangered or threatened species. Although you should use some restraint and not over harvest or take species that are not very abundant in a given area so you are on ecologically and ethically sound grounds. Keep in mind I over simplified the rules here for Ohio but those are the basics. If you call up your state DNR office they may offer a similar permit as skipjack suggested. Hope this helps.

I just went collecting and got a bunch of darters.... i'm starting a new thread about it with a very good moral lol. I took a lot of darters I guess, but they're far from being in small numbers. I saw at least another few hundred of them shooting away, but I just left them. This is when they come up closer and start to breed, so I didn't want to go "crazy".

Well, it actually jumped after it was moved to the pond a few months ago.
At that time, it was probably around 8 or 9 inches?

One thing I noticed... the pic of your cousin's "LMB" doesn't look very LMBish. The hard and soft dorsal are connected, where as in largemouth bass, it is separated. Just my $0.02.
