Hey all,

I read in my Peterson guide that Shiners of the Notropis genusfrequently hybridize. Those of you that have met me at the Kentucky convention know that I am an avid microfisherman, and keep a lifelist. In the case of my lifelist, I like to make sure I have caught a non-hybrid of each species I catch. So, I guess the question is this: If I am somewhere in the south (say, Missouri, where massive speciation has occurred), and there are Wedgespot Shiners and Telescope Shiners in the same stream, will I end up catching nothing but hybrids?

No, hybrids do occur, but given a choice species typically breed with their own kind. Hybrids are really a rarity, though they can be locally common in certain environments.
