Ooh , just noticed. 80 degrees is probably a bit high. I have never kept fish in a part of the house that reached 80. I would try to stay in the lower 70's at most.

The tank might get that high, with this being my 1st time with natives, it is also the 1st time without a heater. it might get to high 70's for a little bit during a week of the summer.

is this tank in an air conditioned house? it should not get that high, and certainly won't be good for the fish for any extended period of time.

No we do not have air conditioning. the only thing I can do is put ice in a bag and float it, or use a fan. I will have 2-3 air stones in it though. It is weird that all of my natives have lived through that heat. Most of the time it will be in the 70's. I don't know, maybe it will only get to 75.

Try a DIY aquarium chiller if you're on a budget. Sounds cool! If you go through with it, post pics!

Plenty of the southern species will be fine at that temperature, but I'm not familiar with the species you mentioned specifically.

If you want to keep those fish, you could make an evaporative chiller out of some acrylic. It would be quite affordable and could drop at least 5 degrees, depending on the size.

would this need a fridge/ fridge units at all? i can not afford any fridges/ fridge units. could i use my 20 gallon glass tank for that?
Does it only need the fan, tubing, and pump?

This depends on your humidity. Evaporative cooling only works in low humidity environments. Do people use swamp coolers there?

do they have thrift shops in your area? you could try this kind of chiller: a cheap thrift shop fridge with tubing running through it to cool off water.

You don't need a fridge, but Skipjack is right, it depends on your environment.

We live in a chaparral biome, basically a desert with more plants. It is pretty dry here. would the evaporation cooler system work then?
