So, I just ordered some rainbow shiners for my main tank, but I was wondering what a good breeding setup would be for these guys in case I decide to give that a try in the future.

What would be a good tank size?

How should I set the tank up?

How should I stock it?

Filtration?

Water Temp?

Water parameters?

The most important part is separating the fry from the adults. There are setups designed for danio rerio (zebra danio) that work well for shiners, too.

Example danio rerio setup that works well for shiners, too:

and this one, too www.youtube.com/watch?v=E381CoymOT8

Example of someone applying this to notropis chrosomus:

It's all about getting the eggs out easily and collecting the maximum number of eggs. They can spawn all they want, there won't be a single fry surviving until you remove them from the tank with the adult fish.

I think that Brian Zimmerman, Mark Binkley, and a few others have had good success breeding chrosomus. I have heard that it is not terribly hard. Might want to pick their brains.
