I've become interested in native fish keeping the past few years. Living in n.y.c., i am unsure of what direction i can take in involving myself in this great hobby. Currently i have blackbanded sunfish collected in n.j. Would i be able to microfish here? It doesn't appear that collecting {and releasing] is allowed here. I would like to explore the waters on staten island if it was somehow allowed. Any ideas anyone can give me on what direction[ if any] i can take would be appreciated, thanks.

You are smart to ask about local regulations before letting enthusiasm get you in trouble. There are some rather restrictive laws in NY. But your local NANFA reps up there Scott and Mike are both on the forum here and should be able to help you.

Welcome to the forum, I am sure that we can help you out. I think you have some limitations on what you can keep, but I also think that you are not totally shut out of keeping native north american species. But like I said, lets let your local reps speak up with a more authoritative voice than mine.

Thanks, right now i've been reading up on things, i was looking for g.potterns "nativefishkeeping 101" which i thought i had but no longer can i download it. Knowing myself, if i keep reading without actually "doing" something pertaining to natives, i'll wind up doing nothing.

I think we have Gerald's 101 article on the NANFA web site... let me take a look for you... I haven't seen any of the NY guys speak up, so I can point you to a few things... first, here are the NY fishing regulations (they will tell you some things)... second, I think the summary of the restrictions are that you cannot keep any fish that is native to NY. You can keep fish form Georgia for example, if they do not also occur naturally in NY. I think that you can also go out and look at fish and drag a seine, but not keep anything. But definitely read the regulations.

Michael pretty much covered it, we in NY can not keep any fish native to NY, whether caught in or out of NY. Scott and I are working on a get together/project once it warms up. More to come soon.

Thanks again, i was able to pull up "geralds 101" from that link. I have read the nys regulations from time to time over the last year or so,it never looks good, haha. I would love to drag a seine here if just to document whats here,i don't think that has been done in a while, not sure. With darters for example,I've been told that only the tesselated are here. Not a lot of water here but i would still like to explore it. Please keep me in mind for that get together/project. Thanks guys.

Welcome aboard! I would encourage you to join NANFA if not currently a member. Nothing to add that hasn't been stated by the Michaels.
