The rainbow shiners were sparring a little bit, so I got some footage. I thought it was interesting to watch. It doesn't happen often at all so I'm not worried about it and none of the fish seemed stressed out afterwards.

They have not colored up yet. One of our prettyist NA minnows for sure. Bob Muller sez when they are on fire spawning you can turn off the lights and they will glow.
:)
Will spawn in aquaria, kinda like Southern Redbelly Dace in what they need, clear gravel, pits or perhaps mounds. I see them associated with Stoneroller pits to my south.

I've only had them for a few weeks. They're growing pretty quickly. They're gaining a little more color each day.

Like Casper says, those are all just babies still... thats just a school yard fight between some 5th grade boys... but I agree with you that they look healthy in general and if you keep feeding them they will only keep looking better and better as they mature... and most of our natives take a while to grow and mature, so enjoy them as they grow... I actually like them at this age since they are essentially orange striped shiners.

Coming from a tropical background, I always thought that Rainbows looked like a Redline Rasbora's prettier cousin. And I still get a kick out of people who upon seeing pics of spawning Rainbows immediately say that the pics must be shopped!

I still haven't seen a tropical fish that rivals the rainbow shiner for color. Even glofish don't look that cool. Right now though, mine look like huge glowlight tetras

"Babies making babies"......my yearling Rainbows bred 2 weekends ago :/ I saw eggs and the teens eating them. They are currently in a 75 with a very thin layer of gravel. Spawned in a corner. The males colored up significantly--not as much metallic blue as full grown males, but still impressive. Aaron, were yours wild caught, or captive bred?
