I was out observing the local sunfish species at a spring-fed creek this past weekend, when a small (about 6 inches or so), object started swimming past me. It was kind of thin, and yellow-ish. At first, I thought it was a snake, but the way it moved in the water made me think otherwise. It would swim, dive down, come back up, and pause. I followed it a ways down the creek until I lost sight of it. I thought it might've been a eel, but when I saw a picture of a Mountain Brook Lamprey, it looked just like the creature I saw.

If your ID is correct it is a VERY good sign in regards to the health of that creek.

The creek originates off a mountain, and runs down and through springs. The water is very clear, and has no human disturbances other than an abandoned TAG railroad bridge.

Could be. Follow it. This time of year they start to swarm. If your lucky you may come across a nest activity.
