I'm planning on going to Allegany State Park, probably the Quaker area, to do some collecting with the family in late April early May. Just wondering if anyone has been there and if you could give me any info. I've never been there so I'm going in blind. I really want to catch some darters and minnows. I was going to make it a day trip but it's 3 hours or better from my house so now I think I may rent a cabin for the night. I would bring the tent but I hate setting up for only one night. Any info. would be greatly appreciated. I will let everyone know when I'm going so maybe we could all meet and do some collecting. Come on warm weather!!!!!!

I've never been there, but I might be interested in doing that. Keep us posted.

I'm shooting for the family and I to get there 4/20 after work and leaving 4/22. There is a 2 night minimum on cabin rentals. One room cabins are $52.50 a night. I hope the weather holds, I've been informed by my better half that she's not getting in the freezing cold water if it's raining and cold out. We were looking at the web site last night( http://nysparks.state.ny.us/ ) and think the Quaker area is the place to go. We are going in completely blind! Kind of nervous because I've never been there and have no idea where to collect. Hope to see some of you there.

Where on that web site do you see a map showing the "Quaker Area"? The only map is a link to Microsoft Map Point, which does not show the "Quaker Area". It would be nice if they would provide an official park map. There is mention of "Quaker Run Creek". Is that the stream you intend to collect in? Or were you thinking of the Allegheny River or some other stream?

When you are on the site click on the male reservation tab on the upper right hand side. It takes you to "reserve america" or something like that. Once you are there you can check out areas and camp sites maps.
I have been trading emails with Scott Schlueter about this trip and he isn't sure if collecting is allowed in the park. He said to check out French creek which isn't to far away from the park. I'm hoping no one bothers us. Hope the weather breaks and warms up a bit.

So it would appear to be somewhere near Allegheny State Park Lake. Excuse me, Allegany. I don't like the way you New Yorkers spell it. We Pennsylvanians have it right. Ha ha. Anyway, according to this:
http://nysparks.stat...o.asp?parkID=91
fishing is allowed in the park. Why wouldn't collecting bait be allowed in the park? I know New York regulations tell you where you can and can't collect bait, but it seems to me that's largely due to the VHS problem. Allegany State Park is in the Allegheny River drainage, not the Great Lakes drainage; it is not in a VHS susceptible area. Still, it would be a good idea to look up the bait collecting regulations; I'm sure they are online. You might want to call the park office, too, in case it's a park rule separate from the regulations. You could camp in the park, and leave the park to collect, if bait collecting in the park is against the park rules.
