That's a long river with a lot of different habitats and levels of quality. Some stretches are pretty fishy, others not as healthy. I don't know it well, though I'm near it and fish it occasionally. I too would be curious to know more about the variety of small fish in the river, as well as non-game fish (suckers, for example). Most of what you can find on the net is focused on the bass and pike fishing. As dams are removed, variety and general river health should improve.
Which stretch(es) of the river are you interested in?
If you're searching the web, remember the e at the end of Plaines in the name.
I hope some more knowledgeable individuals will chime in here.

Sunfish catcher,
I have sampled some Des Plaines River tributaries and the River proper on one occasion.
I spend most of my time in the Kankakee and tribs as it is one one the cleaner and more diverse rivers in the area.
I also head west a lot, in search of cleanish stable water to sample. In short, I tend to avoid urban areas - they are dirty-dangerous and have degraded aquatic communities.
