My name is Chris Lukhaup and i would like to come over to the US ( TN,NC ,GA,VG) to do some underwater photographing of Darters and Shiners. My trip will be in May.
I did a lot of crayfish work in about 30 states and now i would like to get involved in the fish as well.
What would be the best places to go to shoot Shiners and Darters in May ?

Excellent pics. You should try and adjust May to include the first of June to participate in the NC NANFA convention. That would be a very special bonus / addition for your adventure.

M. Wolfe and forum tenders... why can i NOT see Chris's pictures when i am logged in, but when i sign out i can?
I have spoken of this oddity before.

Welcome! Fantastic photos, thanks for sharing them! I second Casper, see if you can make it to our convention in western NC the first weekend in June. As for specific suggestions, I'll leave those for those better versed in those locations.

I can't see Chris' pics when logged in either. Bonus for the nonmember crowd, though!

I know you mentioned this attachment viewing problem once before, but I don't think I have ever seen it before (at least not to this extent). I cannot see the pictures either. And no, I dont have an idea at this point. I will ask Sajjad for his opinion and I will look via the admin site and see if I can figure something out.

Totally off topic, but does anyone know what the plant is that is one the driftwood in the second picture?
P.S. I also can only see the pictures when logged out.

Great photos, what is the ID on the crayfish? On a recent trip in eastern Alabama we found a lot of those which tempted all ofus to get into crayfish. I think we all resisted but it was difficult not trying a couple small ones they were quite striking.

I live in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and know of three clubs local to me in North Carolina.

First, there is a club based in the Triad (three cities: Greensboro, High Point, Winston-Salem) called Aquarium Enthusiasts of Triad, NC. We have several members interesting in going out sampling together as a group sometime soon. I'm an admin and can organize a group outing if you tell me which day you'll be in the area.

A second group based in Charlotte is called the Charlotte Area Aquarists Society. They are going out collecting on Saturday, April 5th.
CAAS outing info:

They expect to see a total of 37 species. Juan Damelines is the contact person, and there is an event page on facebook.

Nice photos! I love the FL springs. I visited all those locations except Grainer last year.

I see that crayfish species often in the FL springs. I've always thought they are nicely patterned. Procambarus spiculifer is what I came up with, though I'm no crayfish expert.

I don't know what species of plant that is, but I think I recognize that exact spot. Parts of Ichetucknee were like a lush underwater rainforest.

Welcome Chris -- Please consider Casper's suggestion to schedule your visit to include the NANFA conference in northwest NC during June 5-8, 2014. That will be an excellent chance to see and photograph a wide variety of Appalachian region fish in several different river basins (New-Kanawha, Yadkin-PeeDee, Catawba-Santee, French Broad, Nolichucky (Tenn) and maybe others. I hope we get to meet and do some collecting & photography with you.

I've collected with Bjoern Loerper and Joerg Bohlen when they were visiting NC in the 90's. I'm in the Neuse River basin (near Raleigh, east-central NC). The Roanoke, Tar River and Cape Fear basins are all within 1 hr drive from here, and each has its own interesting fish & crayfish.

Erica,the plant is called Nasturium floridanum.
I am afraid that i can´t visit the Nanfa Conference because i booked the flights already. Also there is the most important pet fair in Germany May 29-June 3 and i have to give some presentations there.I could come next year.
Gerald,i did some crayfish work in the Neuse River Basin some years ago ..maybe i will come there this year also,depends on how the photographing in TN and KY goes ;-)
