Tens of thousands of fish all being descended from the same initial few has some downsides. Take that, invasive species. Now what would be really cool is if we could isolate the pathogen that caused that, expand it, and introduce it into all the waterways that contain invasive asian carp at the same time. They're not genetically diverse, so the normal population response (that some would survive, be resistant, and exponentially grow in number) is far less likely. This is not your average genetically diverse population, not at all.
