Hey y'all I went fishing this past weekend in Henderson in South Louisiana and we caught this one sunfish that we couldn't quite tell what it was and I hoping y'all would know.Posted Image
Here is a pic of what the average bluegill looks like in there Posted Image
And here is a pic of one of the red spotted we caught Posted Image

Well, not many people like the dreaded "H" word. But looks like you've got a blue / redspotted mutt.

That's what me and my dad thought it was when we caught it.

It is also a dude. It represents one of those hybrids that appears to be dead sterile. We made quite a few a while back and they are a by-product when something goes horribly wrong related to the creation of gynogens.

Could that be part warmouth, mouth seems large for the other two to be the parents? I have caught what I have always thought were bluegill warmouth hybrids in NE Ohio where no redspotted are present and they look a lot like that fish.

Since you mentioned that I dug up this other fish we caught last year in the same area and we couldn't figure out what it was Posted Image

Well the mouth of spotted sunfish appeared to be a slightly larger than bluegill. Don't see the warmouth or green in the hybrid in both pictures.
