I am currently wanting to put together a Native Fish Aquarium. I have been doing tons of research and am ready to start the process. The main questions I have are about Indiana Law. What are the laws on keeping Native Fish in your aquarium in Indiana and also acquiring them? Is there anyone from Indiana on here that knows this information or can point me in the right direction? The main fish I am wondering about are Largemouth Bass, Crappie, Bluegill, Smallmouth Bass, etc.

Thanks. All help is appreciated.

Look on your states web site for the fishing regulations. Sometimes they are pretty clear. I think Indiana has some pretty good things in their fishing regulations about this.

I recommend against calling the DNR as you will not always get a consistent answer as they are not used to dealing with aquarium people.

Most states have a fishing regulations book on line these days and most of those have some pretty clear bait fish rules.

EDIT... Oh I see you are interested in game fish (why?... never mind that is off topic) here are your fishing regulations http://www.eregulati...shing/pageflip/ I dont see anything here that says you have to kill fish before you take them home.

Indiana is a very good State for Native Fish Keepers; you have to keep within the fishing regulations when collecting fish.

Game fish have size & number limits, also Indiana has a list of invasive fish that can't be kept, and you can't keep endangered or threatened fish.

You can buy game fish or catch small ones out of private ponds.

Once in your aquarium you can't release it back into the wild.

I hope that helps.

Mike Berg brings up an important idea, that we don't always consider. If you are actually interested in gamefish, most states have no laws against collecting any size gamefish in private waters( except Tennessee if I recall). So that may be your best bet.

I differ from some, but I often feel better having spoken to someone on the phone, so I like calling my state's wildlife officials. I have gotten a variety of answers, some of which must be wrong, but after taking their name, and other information, I do feel somewhat better as far as my interpretation of the law goes.

Good luck, and remember that there are an awful lot of fish in Indiana besides gamefish that will be at least if not more interesting to keep. Your state's minnow, sucker, and darter species are quite diverse, and most make better aquarium fish.

Good luck.
