Would this work? I know their temps would be fine together, but what about personality? My LFS has a really cool single male Gymno balzanii in, and I think he'd be sweet to have with my sunfish.

Would he work in a 55g with a three pumpkinseeds, and a green, (I may add a warmouth or longear sunfish)?

Thanks!

There's been some discussion on mixing fish with sunfish, http://forum.nanfa.o...h-and-cichlids/

In general, the safest thing is to have a spare tank ready in case one of the fish is on the path to being murdered. And overstocking so no single fish can claim a territory seems to help.

Problems encountered will not be because of species involved, rather simply space and densities of fish. As described all will go well.

Any update? I think balzanii are the PERFECT gymnogeo to try this combo.... I'd want to keep an eye on the green's aggression.

Well, plans changed a bit because I realized the fish at the LFS was mislabeled and was actually Guinacara sp, so he is going in my SA tank, because he needs a heater. BUT... I buying groups of Gymnogeophagus sp. Blue Neon, G. Balzanii, and G. Gymnogenys, as well as Australaheros Oblongum, and Ciclisoma Dimerus Bella Union (two other temperate Uruguayan species), and raising them up with some sunfish (the green, if he doesn't get too aggressive, a couple Pumpkinseeds, Dollars and Centrals, a rock bass, and a hopefully a warmouth.) Any sunfish who gets to aggressive will go either to my Dad's private pond, or the school I teach at. They will all be growing out in a 75g, but eventually I will probably get them a tank in the 150g range. I may also put them out in a pond in the summer. We will see how it goes!

That's awesome. ... make sure to post plenty of pics for us. I kept a very similar Cichlasoma, collected just down stream from your "bella union".... ended up being some of my all time favorite SAs... you are really going to enjoy them. Just make sure to keep several of the cf. gymnogenys together... IME they tend to beat on each other.
Good luck with the Guianacara until then, they have such personality!

Yeah, I will try to update it, because I know I appreciate finding personal experiences when I am researching. Now I am flirting with the idea of doing a strictly Uruguayan tank, with the Gymnos, the dimerus, Australaheros, plateus corys, some kind of tetra and an Uruguayan pleco. If I do that I will put the Sunfish with some CA cichlids, since they may be a better match of aggression levels. But I think I will start a new thread on that...
