Special Information:
Employment period is from July 1 – Sept. 30, 2014 but is subject to possible change depending on work needs and potentially applicants schedule. Work schedules include 10 – 12 hour workdays and occasionally weekend work. Must be willing to work in inclement weather, hike into and camp in remote locations and occasionally spend 1-5 days away from home. Applicants must be able to lift and carry heavy equipment for long distances and multiple days at a time. Transcripts are required with application or resume- unofficial transcripts are acceptable.
Duties:
Conducts fish population surveys/inventories to assess the characteristics and dynamics of fish populations using appropriate fisheries sampling and survey methods, and operating complex equipment. Population surveys and inventories include stream and river electrofishing, gill netting in lakes and reservoirs, routine checking of fish cages and weir traps, bull trout redd counts and radio telemetry. Inventories aquatic habitat using various habitat assessment methods. Ensures the accurate and consistent collection of fisheries data. Files, enters, and summarizes fisheries data in computer databases. Performs and authorizes the purchase, operation, maintenance and repair of equipment necessary for fisheries investigations including using mechanical, electrical, and carpentry techniques.
Competencies:
The incumbent must have knowledge of fish behavior and biology, stream and lake ecology, fish population dynamics and fishery management and techniques. The ability to collect, organize and compile data accurately and efficiently is important. The incumbent must be able to assimilate new sampling techniques quickly and effectively. Research and monitoring will require that the incumbent work in adverse environmental conditions performing field surveys, often requiring hiking long distances. The incumbent must be able to lift and carry heavy equipment for long distances and multiple days at a time. The incumbent must be able to operate boats, backpack, boat, and bank electrofishing gear and be, or have the ability to become certified in electrofishing safety. Must have, or be able to acquire, knowledge and ability to use a variety of sampling gear (e.g., electrofishing equipment gill nets, etc…) some of which can be technical (GPS,GIS, and radio telemetry). Must be able to improvise and adapt field methods and techniques when conditions change. Must be able to use computer databases and other software necessary to enter and compile data sets and check data entry for errors. Data management requires knowledge of computer programs and some knowledge of quantitative techniques and their meaning.
Education/Experience:
1-2 years of college course work in Fisheries Management, Biology or a closely related topic. Experience in the field of Fish and Wildlife Management can be substituted for college course work and is desirable.

Job Description Benefits Supplemental Questions
The incumbent in this position will help propagate fish species and maintain hatchery facility and equipment at the Fish Hatchery. The incumbent is responsible for fish propagation to include feeding fish, cleaning and maintaining ponds, maintaining proper water levels, cleaning raceways, quiescent zones, and other water management structures, may assist in spawning, egg picking, receiving and egg disinfection operations, learning and assisting with necropsy's of various fish groups and gather daily, weekly and monthly biological data; maintenance which includes vegetation control, assisting with routine maintenance of facilities, equipment and property, assisting with diagnoses and repair of plumbing, electrical and mechanical problems a the hatchery and may be required to maintain lawns, shrubbery and hatchery grounds; fish distribution which includes loading fish for distribution, performing sample counts, crowding and loading; maybe required to give assistance with hatchery tours, help with non-hatchery division projects.
Example of Duties:
Operates fish stations, fish hatcheries, game farms, wildlife and waterfowl management areas including cleaning trough, raceways, quiescent zones, and other water management structures.
Assist in spawning, egg picking, receiving & egg disinfection operations. Assist with necropsy's of various fish groups.
Gathers biological data, enters data into databases and other agency programs, prepares reports or summarizes information.
Maintains building(s), facilities and grounds in a clean, safe, and orderly condition. Routine janitorial tasks. Assist in the diagnosis & repair of electrical, plumbing, & mechanical problems.
Assist in loading fish for distribution. Sample counts, crowding, and loading. May assist in distribution of fish to state waters.
Ensures compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws, regulations, and/or agency rules, standards and guidelines, etc.
Inspects facilities, machinery, equipment, systems, etc., to verify safety, maintenance, conditions, functions, and quality.
Assist with hatchery tours, help with non-hatchery Division projects. Attend training in various areas of the Division and hatchery operations.
Other duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications:
Preference will be given to applicants with a Bachelors Degree in Fisheries or a directly related field.
Supplemental Information:
Statewide travel required. Occasional In-state & out-of-state travel. Occasional overnight travel lasting up to 4 days in duration.
