I have an empty 55 gallon tank and would like some ideas on what can go inside.
Can I keep sunfish with shiners? From my research so far, I like sunfish like pumpkinseed, green, longear and dollar.
Can any of those be kept with any type of shiner or minnow? Also how many sunfish/shiners can go in my 55 gallon?

Not very fond of chubs... I'm looking for something with a little bit more color?

take a look at some of the pictures from the convention... quite some color on those chubs... they are an underappreciated group

Sorry I'm still new to this forum, where can I view these photos?

use the search feature to look around, but Ben's thread on microfishing might be the one that will show you some stuff that might interest you...

Orange spotted sunfish are found throughout Illinois. They stay pretty small, and are known for having a good temperament. They are very attractive, and work well in community tanks.

There are northern longear sunfish in northern Illinois. I think they are just called northern sunfish now. Lepomis peltastes. They are also very attractive, stay relatively small, and are less aggressive than central longear sunfish.

Those are probably your two best bets that are fairly close to you.

Spotfin, steelcolor, and red shiners are all found in Illinois, and would be IMO compatible with either of the sunfish I mentioned.

Yeah, smaller sunfish and larger shiner (cyprinella) will be your best option.
